"As regards Bel·shaz´zar the king, he made a big feast for a thousand of his grandees, and in front of the thousand he was drinking wine. 2 Bel·shaz´zar, under the influence of the wine, said to bring in the vessels of gold and of silver that Neb·u·chad·nez´zar his father had taken away from the temple that was in Jerusalem, that from them the king and his grandees, his concubines and his secondary wives might drink. 3 At that time they brought in the vessels of gold that they had taken away from the temple of the house of God that was in Jerusalem, and from them the king and his grandees, his concubines and his secondary wives drank. 4 They drank wine, and they praised the gods of gold and of silver, copper, iron, wood and stone. Was Belshazzar was king of the Chaldean Empire (Daniel 5: 1, 2)? The historical record testifies that Belshazzar was in fact coregent with his father and effectively ruler at the time of the account. Ancient tablets reveal that Nabonidus was away from Babylon for years at a time and that he "entrusted the kingship" of Babylon to his eldest son Belshazzzar.

Was Belshassar son and successor of Nebuchadnezzar? (Daniel 5: 1, 2) Neither the Hebrew nor the Aramaic language has words for "grandson" ('son of' therefore can mean either "son" OR grandson). Some authorities suggest that Nabonidus married a daughter of Nebuchadnessar to legitimize his rule so this would make Belshazzar (his eldest son) Nebuchadnessar's grandson.

DANIEL CHAPTER 5: BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST

• Nebuchadnazzars's son Belshazzarholds a grand feast [4:2-3]
• The king, intoxicated called for the utensils taken from Solomon's temple to be brought, so he can use them to praise their gods [5:6-7]
• A hand appears and writes an ominous 'writing on the wall' [5:9]
• A terrified king summons his interpreteres, none of whom can dissifer the message [5:12-17]
• The Queen recommends he send for Daniel (Belteshassar) [5:24-25]
• Once summoned the king offers Daniel prestege & richess if he can explain the messsage[5:26-28]
• Declining the reward, Daniel nonetheless interprets the message[ [5:29-35]
• God's judgent is that the kingdom will fall the the divided and given to the Medes and the Persians [ [5:36-37]
• The kingdom indeed falls that very night Belshazzar is killed and 62 year old Darius the Mede takes power [ [5:36-37]
