So they said to him: “Show us, please, the way into the city, and we will treat you kindly.”* 25 So the man showed them the way into the city, and they struck the city with the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.+ 26 The man went to the land of the Hitʹtites and built a city and named it Luz, which is its name to this day.

Bethel thereafter appears as a boundary city between the territories of the tribes of Ephraim and Benjamin . It is listed as assigned to Benjamin, but the record shows that it was the house of Joseph (of which Ephraim was a part) that effected the conquest of the city. (Jos 16:1, 2; 18:13, 21, 22; Jg 1:22-26 )

TAANACH : An enclave city of Manasseh in the territory of Issachar (Jos 17:11; 1Ch 7:29) that was assigned to the Kohathite Levites. (Jos 21:20, 25) Under the command of Joshua, the Israelites defeated the king of Taanach. (Jos 12:7, 21) But the Manassites failed to drive out the Canaanites from this and other cities. Eventually, however, these Canaanites were put to forced labor. (Jg 1:27, 28) In the time of Judge Barak the forces of Jabin the king of Hazor, led by his army chief Sisera, were defeated at Taanach. (Jg 5:19) During Solomon’s reign the city was in the district assigned to Baana, one of the 12 deputies in charge of supplying food for the royal table. (1Ki 4:7, 12) Archaeological evidence from Taanach and the relief on a temple wall at Karnak indicate that the city was taken by Pharaoh Shishak when he invaded Palestine in the fifth year of the reign of Solomon’s son and successor Rehoboam.​—2Ch 12:2-4.

Taanach is identified with Tell Taʽanakh, about 8 km (5 mi) SSE of Megiddo and on the south edge of the Plain of Jezreel (ʽEmeq Yizreʽel). The site occupied an important position on at least two trade routes, one leading to the Plain of Acco and the other to the Plain of Sharon.

Ephraim The Caʹnaan·ites continued to dwell among them in Gezer.+

30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitʹron and the inhabitants of Naʹha·lol.+ The Caʹnaan·ites continued to dwell among them and were subjected to forced labor.+

31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acʹco and the inhabitants of Siʹdon,+ Ahʹlab, Achʹzib,+ Helʹbah, Aʹphik,+ and Reʹhob.+ 32 So the Ashʹer·ites continued to dwell among the Caʹnaan·ites inhabiting the land, because they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and the inhabitants of Beth-aʹnath,+ but they continued to dwell among the Caʹnaan·ites inhabiting the land.+ The inhabitants of Beth-sheʹmesh and Beth-aʹnath became forced laborers for them.

34 The Amʹor·ites confined the Danites to the mountainous region, for they would not let them come down into the plain.*+ 35 So the Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, Aijalon,+ and Sha·albim.+ But when the power* of the house of Joseph increased,* they were forced into hard labor. 36 The territory of the Amʹor·ites was from the ascent of A·krabʹbim,+ from Seʹla upward.
