EGLON THE KING OF MOAB

“And once again the Israelites began doing what was bad in Jehovah’s eyes.+ So Jehovah let EGLON the king of Moab prevail over Israel, because they did what was bad in Jehovah’s eyes. 13 Furthermore, he brought against them the Ammonites and the Amalek·ites . They attacked Israel and captured the city of palm trees.+ 14 The Israelites served Eglon the king of Moab for 18 years ” - Judges 3:13-14

The destroyed city of Jericho subsequently became part of Benjamite territory bordering on Ephraim and Manasseh. (Jos 16:1, 7; 18:12, 21) Not long thereafter some kind of settlement apparently sprang up at the site. It was captured by Moab’s King Eglon and remained under his control for 18 years. (Jg 3:12-30) In the time of King David a settlement continued to exist at Jericho. (2Sa 10:5; 1Ch 19:5) But not until Ahab’s reign did Hiel the Bethelite actually rebuild Jericho. The prophetic curse pronounced by Joshua over 500 years earlier was then fulfilled, Hiel losing Abiram his firstborn as he laid the foundation and Segub his youngest son when he put up the doors.​—Jos 6:26; 1Ki 16:34. - it Vol II p. 34
