2470 BCEJAPHETH BORN SOJJ: #78: “Teaching the Word of God” (Acts 18:11)www.jw.org/en/library/music-songs/sing-out-joyfully/78-teaching-word-of-god/?media=sjjc QUESTION Does Genisis 10:21 not state that Shem was the oldest SON?While the majority of translations do present Shem as the oldest son, the actual Hebrew text is some what ambiguous and allow for more than one possible translation. The Hebrew of Gen. 10.21 uses the adjective לֹודָּגַה "haggadol", (for which the LXX has "Japheth meízonos", a superlative which can mean greater, larger, longer, taller or older) which in English can be translated as "elder/eldest". The bible encyclopaedia Insight on the Scriptures states the following: Some translations refer to Shem as “the brother of Japheth the oldest [“elder,” KJ],” while others call him the “elder [“older,” AT] brother of Japheth.” (AS, Dy, RS, JB, Ro) The ancient versions likewise differ—the Septuagint, the translation by Symmachus, and the Targum of Onkelos present Japheth as the older, while the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Latin Vulgate, and the Syriac versions place Shem as the older brother of Japheth. The weight of evidence found in the rest of the Bible record, however, indicates that Shem likely was Noah’s second son, younger than Japheth.wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1200003997Matthew Poole's Commentary Though the words in Hebrew may seem ambiguous, yet other texts make it probable that Japheth was the elder. For Noah began to beget children in his five hundredth year, Genesis 5:32. And Shem was but a hundred years old two years after the flood, Genesis 11:10. Therefore he was not the eldest. And Ham is concluded not to be the eldest, from Genesis 9:24; of which see Poole "Genesis 9:24"; if so, Japheth must be the eldest. And Shem is generally named first, not because he was the first-born, but because he had the privileges of the first-born, and was chief in dignity and authority in the church of God. VARIOUS TRANSLATION King James Version (KJV) Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. New International Version Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. New World Translation Children were also born to Shem, the forefather of all the sons of Eʹber and the brother of Japheth the oldest.BIBLE DICTIONARIES ATS Bible Dictionary - Japheth: Enlargement, the eldest of Noah's three sons, Genesis 9:24 10:21, born one hundred years before the flood Easton's Bible Dictionary - Japheth: ... one of the sons of Noah, mentioned last in order (Genesis 5:32; 6:10; 7:13), perhaps first by birth.

QUESTION Does the bible say Noah was 500 years old when he fathered Shem?
Actually, the words that appear in the Hebrew text present two independent facts with only a presumed connection.
The text does not explicitly states the relation between the two facts. Reasonably however we can assume that the meaning is that Noah first became a father in that year. Unless Noah fathered these boys with three different (and surprisingly synchronised) women, they were not all three born at the same time. There is nothing in the subsequent narrative to indicate the boys were triplets. Most bible translators therefore either leave the two facts independent linking them with the chronologically neutral "and"
... or add an adverb of time ("after") that indicates, without precision the chronological order of the two above facts
