QUESTION: Does the Watchtower Society own the stock in Tabacco companies? No. The Watchtower Society has NEVER owned the securities in any Tobacco companies. QUESTION: Did the Watchtower receive over a million dollars from a trust that dealed in Tabacco and Arms? No, what has been widely circulated on the internet is misinformation about a donation from one Henrietta Riley to the society. A Trusts ensure that money, managed by a trustee, are set aside and made available to beneficiaries when they reach a certain age. According to illegally leaked document Ms Riley names the Watchtower society as a beneficiary of her trust; we do not know if the WTS was the only beneficiary or not. The only documents available for view are a decade's old tax return and one page of a brokerage statement Tax Return www.jwfacts.com/images/riley. Brokerage Statement www.jwfacts.com/images/riley2.JPG How much money did Ms Riley's trust generate from Phillip Morris in the year in question? Most of the income from the trust (more than 95%, almost two million dollars) came from rental property , but 3.5% of the income of the Riley Trust, notably $63,000 was generated by a mutual fund. Mutual funds are fluid, meaning they invest, sell, and then re-invest in any number of companies all the time and the owner of a mutual fund has very little say over which companies are invested in. Ms Riley's mutual fund contained a "consumer staples/consumer goods" component which revealed that 0.05% of that income came from Phillip Morris stock - see column four under "Estimated Annual Income". This amounted to $912 in 2002. What portion of that money was donated to the Society? We don't know, we don't have the trust documents which state who the other beneficiaries are (if there were any) or how much each beneficiary received. If, for example, the money was divided betwee, 10 beneficiaries equally, then the Society would have received a gift/donation of about 90 dollars. CONCLUSION: The Watchtower society never has owned any stock in any Tobacco company. The "controversy" is basically that the Society recieved a donation in 2002 from money generated by the trust of one Henrietta Riley. Possibly 900 dollars or less of the total amount came from a company which among other things, owns stock in Tobacco Companies. Source www.topix.com/forum/religion/jehovahs-witness/TPG9E3CMR6BISKD0J
