QUESTION; why did the Mosaic law (law of Moses) exclude those with genetal defects from being priests?
Priesthood was passed from Father to son, God wanted priests who could have children to succeed them. So the law barring individuals with genital defects both reflects gods high regard for reproduction and ensures the continuation of the priesthood.
The law specifically barrs those that have been "castrated" whose genetals have been "cut off" (De 23:1). Such ‘castration’ had to do with deliberate emasculation for immoral purposes, such as homosexuality. Such a one was to be kept out of the congregation.
QUESTION: But do thses restrictions reflect a distain for the physically impaired on the part of God?
This rule had nothing to do with individual rights. Serving as a priest was not a right. God selected one single family (decendents of Aaron) to serve as priests. This would mean that 99.999% if the population was excluded from approaching the Alter. Would it be reasonable to conclude therefore, that those excluded for whatever reason from serving as priest were despised or detested by God? Obviously not.
The Law stated: “You must not call down evil upon a deaf man, and before a blind man you must not put an obstacle.”—Lev. 19:14, highlighting Gods concern and love for those that suffer physical handicapps indeed those barred from service were allowed their full familial rights (including being provided for materially).
