In Hebrew (the language of the bible) the word "perfect" doesn't always mean without fault but "complete" "whole" "undivided" so saying that David's heart was " perfect with the Lord" simply means he served whole souled, didn't hold back, did all he could. David did his best but there were times when his best wasn't good enough, but even then he repented and accepted the discipline. Unlike Solomon he never gave up the "race". That's why God loved David so and forgave him for his errors. Parallel Verses
