In Revelation chapter 1 several individuals are speaking. Jesus is four times specifically identified by name and distinguished as different and seperate from "God" (see Rev1:1, 2, 5, 9). We can Identify three different speakers in John chapter 1.
Since Jesus is consistently identified by name it is reasonable to conclude that when the writer refers to the words of "GOD" he is refering to YHWH /Jah rather than Jesus Christ. Although the original Greek manuscripts were written without punctuation, most modern bible translations use "quotation" marks to help the reader identify who is saying what.
Note who is speaking in verse 8 in the following CATHOLIC bible translations:
If Jesus was speaking, given the writer has not hesitated to use Jesus' name in this chapter, we can reasonably conclude he would have written "I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord JESUS CHRIST"or taken other means to identify Jesus as the speaker of these words.
Further the Catholic NABRE bible refers the reader to the following parallel passages which read in the JERUSALEM bibe as follows:
So it seems as if the writer is on this occasion quoting or alluding to passages that refer specifically to YAHWEH.
